What can I do with a CNC Router?

A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Router allows designers to drill out surfaces of materials. They are great for designs that need to be replicated or for precise placement of your designs.

The nitty-gritty is that the endmill, which is like a drill bit, can move in three axes on a router, across the x, y, and z planes. For some ideas of how people might use a CNC, see the Pinterest page below!

First step to use the CNC? Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM)!

You will need to have Fusion 360 ready to go. From there, this video is a great

This CNC has a 4'x4' table, so it can make almost any of your design dreams come true!

General steps to CNC Machining

  1. Design your part using Fusion 360 (You get a free version of this software as a student). There are so many videos to get you started if you aren't sure how to use Fusion. It is an industry-standard software that can take some time to learn, so be patient with yourself.
  2. Use CAM or Manufacture in Fusion 360 to create and preview toolpaths. You will need to know what endmills you need (be sure to check with Ms. H to ensure we have them and/or see if it's possible to order the proper endmill for the job)
  3. Generate your G-Code.
  4. Set up the CNC with the right tools, go through tutorial with Ms. H and machine your parts!

Safety Guidelines

  • The fluted (bladed) portion of the endmill is VERY sharp. DO NOT TOUCH IT.
  • You should ALWAYS wear safety glasses when working with the CNC. When the vacuum, filter, and router are running it can be quite loud. It is STRONGLY suggested you also use hearing protection.
  • Keep a 1 foot boundary around the CNC when it is running.
